Collecting and processing 360 video to create walkthroughs

Overview

A 360 walkthrough can be created by uploading a 360 video to DroneDeploy. Walkthroughs are a powerful feature that can be used to virtually view your entire job-site, compare changes over time and create issues and reporting using the standard inspections tools. We support a wide variety of cameras as long as the video is in the correct format. See below for details.

Overview, side-by-side comparison, issue creation, and inspection.

Cameras and File Formats

It is important to use the supported camera and file format for creating a great walkthrough. While DroneDeploy supports most 360 cameras we recommend the Insta360 cameras for their good quality footage and reasonable cost.

Recommended Hardware
We recommend using the Insta360 OneRS 1-Inch as our primary preferred camera for capture when using the DroneDeploy walkthrough app and alternatively the ONE R, ONE X or ONE X2.

Depending on the camera used you can either upload the files directly from the SD card (Insta360 cameras) or convert them to the correct format (Ricoh, GoPro, Garmin) before uploading them.

Supported Video Formats

DroneDeploy supports two 360 video formats:

  • A pair of .INSV video files (Insta360 cameras)
  • A single equirectangular (see below) video .MP4 (Ricoh, GoPro, Garmin, Insta360)

*To produce the INSV pair, we recommend choosing a 5.7k or higher resolution (with any frame rate):

Either upload and matching pair of .INSV files or upload a .MP4 file.

If you are uploading an .MP4 file (non Insta360 cameras) please ensure that it is an EQUIRECTANGULAR video. The image below shows an example of three common formats of video. DroneDeploy only supports one of them so you will need to use the accompanying software of your 360 camera to convert before upload.

Dual-fisheye video is not currently supported. Please convert to Equirectangular using your camera software before uploading

Capturing a Walkthrough with a vehicle?

Note, that DroneDeploy does not recommend capturing a Walkthrough with a vehicle. Capturing a Walkthrough at normal vehicle speeds can affect the alignment path when processing the Walkthrough files. If you require a vehicle capture you will need to drive at 5MPH maximum.

However, please keep in mind alignment may still be affected at this speed.

How to convert unsupported GoPro Videos to DroneDeploy:

Capture Best Practices

We recommend using the Walkthrough App for the best capture experience. If you’re unable to use the Walkthrough App, you can still process and analyze 360 Walkthroughs in DroneDeploy.

Simply hit record on your video camera and collect walkthrough videos. Cameras can be held with a monopod, mounted on PPE, or vehicle-mounted. Where possible move around the site at an even pace and limit jerky movements or areas of very low light. Additionally, ensure the camera lens is always clean and void of view inhibitors such as dirt, hands, or un-secure PPE. We recommend the Insta360 cameras.

Avoid walking in a loop
Walkthrough path reconstruction errors can occur when you end your walk in the same place as you started. Avoid making a perfect loop, and instead, strive to keep your start and end locations at least 20 meters apart.

Lighting Consistency
When you transition from a well-lit area to a dark area during a walkthrough, the algorithm loses track and therefore the rest of the walkthrough will not be aligned. Ensure you have lighting consistency throughout your walkthrough for best results.
Shutter Speed
You can try setting using the "FASTER" shutter speed setting on your capture to reduce any blur in the videos and images.

Timelapse Videos
For best results with timelapse videos, there still needs to be some motion between updates for successful processing. We recommend not going slower than 1 frame/second (but more frequent sampling preferred).

Upload and Processing

After ensuring you have 360 videos in the correct format (see 'Supported Video Formats' above). Simply click upload to upload the file(s) to DroneDeploy.

When your walkthrough is ready you will receive an email. Click the View Walkthough button to align it to your site and explore the video.

Alignment

**Please note that Walkthrough paths are only viewable on the Desktop/Web version of DroneDeploy

We recommend the use of the Walkthrough App for the best experience. You’ll mark your start and end points before and after recording, and we will automatically align your walkthrough, for immediate viewing after processing.

If you aren’t using the Walkthrough App, you can still upload walkthroughs to DroneDeploy via the Upload tab. You’ll need to manually align these walkthroughs after processing, following the two-step process below:

 1. On the left side of the alignment screen, choose the start and endpoint of the walkthrough with the numbered blue pins:

In the right screen, choose the layer you'd like to align to. You can choose the Basemap, which includes the latest orthomosaic, or any uploaded overlays.

2. Once you have your desired points and base map - manipulate the points to align and scale the walkthrough path:

Walkthrough Panel

Choose the walkthrough tab on the left side of your project to access a list of walkthroughs on that site.

Choose any of the walkthroughs to adjust details such as color, name, description, alignment or to delete the walkthrough completely.
