Proper preparation ensures efficient data collection and minimizes technical issues during field operations. Use this guide to maintain your equipment and prepare for a successful Stand Count mission.

When and why do we use this tool?

Preparing before heading to the field ensures all hardware is functional, software is current, and batteries are charged. This proactive approach prevents downtime and ensures high-quality crop emergence data capture.

How to prepare for a Stand Count mission

Hardware and software maintenance

Perform these checks at the home or office at least 24 hours before your mission:

  1. Power on all devices: Turn on the drone, remote controller, and mobile device.

  2. Verify firmware:

    • Open the DJI app (DJI GO, DJI Fly, or DJI Pilot 2 depending on your drone model).

    • Check for and install any available firmware updates for the drone and controller.

  3. Update the DroneDeploy app:

    • On iOS, check the Apple App Store for updates to the DroneDeploy app.

    • If using the DJI RC Pro Enterprise controller, ensure the DroneDeploy application is running the latest version.

  4. Inspect equipment:

    • Examine all connection cables for cuts or frays.

    • Ensure all cords connect securely to their respective ports.

  5. Manage storage:

    • Format your SD card to clear previous imagery and ensure enough space for the mission.

    • Check that your mobile device has at least 2 GB of free disk space (10 GB recommended).

  6. Charge batteries: Fully charge the drone batteries, remote controller, and mobile device.

Test flights

  1. DJI test flight: Execute a brief test flight using the DJI app to confirm basic flight functionality and camera operation.

  2. DroneDeploy test flight: Perform a short test mission in the DroneDeploy app to ensure the software communicates correctly with the drone and triggers the camera as expected.

Key features

  • Pre-flight verification: Ensures all system components are ready for the field.

  • Firmware alignment: Maintains compatibility between DJI hardware and DroneDeploy software.

Limitations

  • Updates: Firmware and software updates typically require a high-speed internet connection and cannot be completed at most field sites.

  • Offline restrictions: Flight plans must be synced to the mobile device while online before heading to remote areas.
