Uploading preprocessed point cloud data - LiDAR (.las)

Have more questions? Submit a request

DroneDeploy allows the upload of preprocessed point cloud data in .las format directly into a project. This feature enables users to store, view, and analyze LiDAR data alongside other reality capture media in one central location.

Availability: Who has access?

  • This feature is available for Ground Pro and Enterprise subscriptions.

  • Users can upload .las files that are smaller than 5GB.

How to upload preprocessed point cloud data

Follow these steps to upload your .las file to DroneDeploy:

  1. Open your project in DroneDeploy.

  2. Navigate to the Upload tab.

  3. Click the blue Upload button.

  4. Drag and drop your .las file or select it from your device.Upload_.ls_files.png

  5. Wait for the file to be processed. A confirmation email is sent once the upload is complete.

The file initially appears in the center of the project but is georeferenced to its correct location once processing is finished.

Key features

  • Centralized storage: Keep LiDAR data in the same project as your aerial maps and 360 walkthroughs.

  • 3D visualization: View the point cloud in the 3D viewer without needing third-party software.

  • Annotations: 3D annotations are supported for these uploads, allowing for precise measurements and notes.

Limitations

  • File size: The maximum file size for a single .las upload is 5GB.

  • Supported formats: Only .las files are supported for this upload type; .obj or other 3D formats are not compatible.

  • Elevation data: Preprocessed LiDAR uploads do not include DEM or DTM data. As a result, volume and elevation calculations are not available for these specific layers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the .las file georeferenced?
A: Yes, the file is positioned according to its embedded coordinate reference system.

Q: Can I perform volume calculations using these uploads?
A: No, volume calculations require a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), which is not included in these preprocessed 3D uploads.

Q: Can I upload 3D model files like .obj?
A: At this time, only .las files are supported for preprocessed point cloud uploads.
