Troubleshooting compass calibration in DJI Fly

Have more questions? Submit a request

Proper compass calibration ensures your drone maintains accurate orientation and flight stability. If you encounter interference or calibration errors in the DJI Fly app, follow these steps to resolve the issue.

How to calibrate your compass

The compass is a sensitive sensor that can be affected by electromagnetic interference. Follow these steps to perform a successful calibration:

  1. Move to a clear area. Ensure you are away from large metal structures, reinforced concrete, or underground power lines.

  2. Open the DJI Fly app.

  3. Navigate to the System Status Bar. Tap the top-left corner of the screen.

  4. Select Compass. Tap the Compass section to view current status.

  5. Click Calibrate. Follow the on-screen prompts to rotate the aircraft.

  6. Rotate the aircraft 360° horizontally. Hold the drone flat and rotate until the app prompts you for the next step.

  7. Rotate the aircraft 360° vertically. Point the nose of the drone toward the ground or sky as directed and rotate again.

Key Details

  • Interference Alerts: If the app displays "Compass Interference," move the drone at least 10 feet away from any metal objects before retrying.

  • Status Indicators: A successful calibration will result in a "Calibration Successful" message. If it fails, the indicator will remain red or yellow.

When and why do we use this tool?

Calibrating the compass is essential when flying in a new location or if the drone exhibits "toilet bowl" circling behavior during flight. Regular calibration builds trust in the aircraft's automated return-to-home functions.

Limitations

  • Environmental Obstacles: Calibration may fail in areas with high magnetic activity, such as parking garages or near cell towers.

  • Hardware Damage: If the compass remains unresponsive after multiple attempts, the internal sensor may be physically damaged.

FAQs

Q: How often should I calibrate?
A: You should calibrate when the DJI Fly app prompts you or if you have traveled more than 30 miles from your last flight location.
