Firmware update for docked drones

Have more questions? Submit a request

Keep your DJI Dock and docked drone running the latest, DroneDeploy-recommended firmware for optimal performance, compatibility, and security. This article covers how to check your firmware status, update your devices, and troubleshoot common issues.

How firmware updates work

When you select a docked drone inside DroneDeploy, the system automatically checks if both the dock and aircraft are running the recommended firmware version. If either the dock or drone is out of date, you will see a warning indicator directly below the docked drone selector. Click the warning to open a details modal.

You will see information on:

  • Estimated update time and percent complete (approximately 20 minutes)

Updating your firmware

To update your firmware, follow these steps:

  1. Click the warning indicator below your docked drone selector in DroneDeploy.

  2. Review instructions in the pop-up modal, then confirm to proceed with the update.

  3. The update process will begin automatically:

    • The dock firmware updates first, followed by the aircraft.

    • A progress bar shows real-time status for each update.

    • You can continue using other features in DroneDeploy; the update status stays visible under the docked drone selector.

What to expect during the update

  • Updates usually complete in about 20 minutes.

  • Both the Dock and Drone will be updated. Make sure you leave the Dock powered on.

  • You may use other DroneDeploy features (Explore, Flight Planning and Reporting) while the dock and drone update.

  • The warning notification will clear once both updates finish. Your dock and drone will then be ready for flight.

Troubleshooting and tips

  • The upgrade can take a while if the internet connection is poor. We recommend having greater than 25Mbps upload and download at the dock.

  • If the update does not finish after 45 minutes or fails, then try the update again. Poor internet connections can cause issues.

  • Make sure both the dock and drone have a stable internet connection during the update.

  • If the Dock and/or Drone is on a higher version (which DroneDeploy is waiting on DJI for some fixes) then sometimes DJI releases firmware versions that cannot be downgraded. In this case the "upgrade" will fail. Please contact Support.

  • Persistent problems? Contact Support and include screenshots of any error messages.

FAQs

Q: What happens if I skip the firmware update?
A: Some features might be unavailable, and you could experience performance or compatibility issues until the firmware is up to date. We recommend doing this as soon as an update is available.

Q: Can I fly the drone while it is updating?
A: No, the dock and aircraft are not available for flight until the firmware update is fully complete.

Q: Do I need to perform any preflight checks after updating?
A: You will go through the standard preflight checklist which will check for any issues. We recommend opening the dock from the preflight checklist page after a firmware upgrade so the drone turns on and the drone health check can also run.
