Capturing and Viewing Photo Directions in DroneDeploy
DroneDeploy now allows you to capture and view the direction of photos taken in the field. This feature automates the process of capturing and displaying photo directions using the internal compass of mobile devices.
How it Works
When capturing standard photos on exterior maps or aligned interior maps, a view cone will appear on the crosshair, indicating the direction the photo will be taken. This cone is based on your device's compass.
When viewing photos, a view cone will also be displayed for standard photos if directional data exists. This helps you understand the orientation of the photo.
Key Improvements
- Automated Photo Direction: No more manual input needed for setting photo directions.
- Improved User Experience: A streamlined drawing calibration flow for interior photos.
- Consistent Orientation: Ensures consistent orientation of photos taken.
- Visual Context: Easily understand the direction of each photo with the view cone.
Exterior Maps:
- When in standard photo capture mode on an exterior map, you will see a crosshair with a direction cone overlay.
- Take a photo, and the direction cone will rotate based on your phone's compass data.
- When viewing a standard photo, a view cone will appear if directional data is available.
Interior Maps:
- If no alignment data exists for an interior map, you will be prompted to calibrate the orientation upon your first standard photo capture.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the drawing calibration.
- Once calibrated, the view cone will appear during capture and viewing, similar to exterior maps.
Using the Feature
With GPS enabled, your mobile device should utilize the direction you're facing as a directional indicator on your images.
Once captured, the direction is saved to the image and populated when viewing on desktop:
This allows you to easily tell where the photo was taken, as well as in which direction.
If a piece of media does not have a direction applied or the direction needs to be edited, you can edit this with the Move Media option.
Select the crosshairs in the top right when viewing your photo:
In the window, click and drag around the pin to change the view-cone:
To save the view cone direction, select Save.
Recalibration
Recalibration allows you to recalibrate the entire level by adjusting the arrow of an image.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What if my compass readings are inaccurate?
A: Compass readings can sometimes be inaccurate. If you notice any issues, try recalibrating your device's compass. The accuracy of the photo direction is dependent on the accuracy of your device's compass.
Q: I am experiencing difficulties with the calibration process. What should I do?
A: If you experience difficulties with the calibration process, ensure you are following the on-screen instructions carefully.
Q: How does the accuracy of my device's compass affect the photo direction?
A: The accuracy of the photo direction is dependent on the accuracy of your device's compass.
Q: Will photos I've uploaded in the past have direction applied?
A: If your historical data was transferred from StructionSite, it should retain photo direction. If the data was captured in DroneDeploy prior to February 2025, you will need to use the Move Media options mentioned above to add a photo direction.
