Ground Mobile: Field Notes on Mobile

Overview

Field Notes lets you document observations, flag issues, and leave instructions directly on your site media from the Ground App. You can add a note to a photo right after you capture it, or open any existing unsynced photo pin and add one from there. Notes sync to the web so your office team can view them alongside the rest of your project data.

In this article:

Requirements

  • iOS device running the DroneDeploy Ground App version 2.269.0 or later
  • A DroneDeploy Ground subscription
  • Internet connection to sync notes (notes can be created offline and will upload on next sync)

Create a field note on a photo

Option A: Right after you capture a photo

When you capture a standard photo in Capture Mode, a quick-create banner appears at the bottom of the screen.

  1. Tap Add Field Note in the banner that appears after capture.
  2. Type your note, or hold the microphone icon to dictate using voice-to-text. Release to stop recording - the transcription populates the summary field.
  3. The type defaults to Observation and severity defaults to Minimal - update them if needed.
  4. Tap Save. The note is saved to the photo and will sync on your next upload.

Option B: From an existing unsynced photo pin

  1. In Explore Mode, tap on an unsynced photo pin to open the pin detail.
  2. Tap the Field Note button.
  3. Type your note, or hold the microphone icon to dictate. Release to stop.
  4. Type, severity, and status default to Observation / Minimal - update if needed.
  5. Tap Save.

.

Note: You can add multiple field notes to the same photo. Tapping the note bounding box on the pin detail shows the most recently created note.

View field notes

On mobile

Field notes appear on the photo pins they're attached to. A field note icon is shown on the pin preview to indicate a note exists. Tap the pin to open it and read the note.

On the web

All field notes created in the Ground App sync to the web automatically. Open the project in your browser and navigate to the relevant map or level - field notes appear on the media they're attached to.

Note: Field notes created in the web app on annotations or aerial imagery are not visible in the Ground Mobile App. Only notes attached to Ground media (standard photos) appear in the app.

Tips

  • Voice-to-text works offline - dictate your note in the field and it will sync with the rest of your media when you reconnect.
  • Field notes save locally first - even if you lose connection mid-capture, notes are stored on your device and upload automatically.
  • Check the sync list - after adding a field note, the photo's sync card shows a field note badge so you can confirm it's queued.

Limitations

  • Field notes can only be created on standard photo pins (2D photos). Panoramic photos and Walk frames are not currently supported on mobile.
  • Field notes cannot be edited or deleted after saving in the mobile app - use the web for edits.
  • Field notes cannot be commented on or shared from mobile in the current release.
  • Field notes attached to annotations (created on the web) do not appear in the Ground Mobile App. Only notes attached to Ground media (standard photos) show in-app.
  • Automatic linking of Walk photos to specific Walk frames is not supported - the photo pin is placed where you confirm your location on the map.
