3D Walks Capture Best Practices

With Ground Pro, your Walks automatically process as 3D, and produce a floor map, a ceiling map, and a 3D model of the walked area. The same best practices that produce a quality Walk produce a quality 3D Walk. Three things matter most: good lighting, good coverage, and a steady camera at a steady pace.

1. Good lighting

Poor lighting is one of the most common reasons a walk or map looks low quality. Bring supplemental lighting indoors and use a halo or ring light in darker areas. If lighting changes dramatically along your route (for example, indoor to outdoor), capture separate walks instead of one long walk. Please note, ceiling maps do not generate for outdoor captures.

2. Sufficient coverage

Poor coverage can cause gaps in your 3D Walk so plan your route in advance. In rooms, walk the perimeter and hug the walls rather than stepping in and out. In large open areas, walk a lawnmower pattern with overlapping passes. Get within 3 ft (1 m) of areas that matter to capture important details. Remember: if the camera can't see it, then it won't be in the floor map, ceiling map, or 3D model.

3. Steady camera, steady pace

Walk at a casual, consistent pace from start to finish, like you're holding a full cup of coffee. Walking too fast causes blurry frames, and changing pace creates stitching issues. Keep the camera upright and stable with a selfie stick, monopod, or hard-hat mount. Open doors in advance, or have someone walk ahead of the camera operator, so the path stays continuous. On very large sites (ex. data center), capture Walks in logical sections as longer Walks are more prone to human errors like a shaky hand.
