DroneDeploy Ground's "3D Scan" feature enables users to create detailed 3D models of interior spaces using their iOS mobile devices. This technology allows for scanning and modeling the inside of buildings and enclosed areas, providing valuable digital representations of indoor environments for various applications.

Please keep in mind:

  • This product is still being developed and is in beta, therefore your experience may not be seamless end-to-end. Users should focus on evaluating the following during this beta.
  • Our 3D scanning has been built and optimized for scanning on the exterior; however, we’d appreciate any feedback for interior scans. Until we have scans supported for Levels, you can scan interior items on the exterior.

Use Cases for DroneDeploy Ground's 3D Scan

  1. Site Inspection

The 3D Scan feature assists in capturing detailed models of interior spaces, allowing construction professionals to track progress and ensure compliance with design plans. This visual documentation can help identify potential compliance issues or deviations from original specifications.

  2. Remodeling and Renovation

Accurate measurements and visualizations of existing interiors are essential for renovation projects. With 3D Scan, users can model spaces to facilitate planning, ensuring renovations are executed efficiently and accurately based on the digital model.

  3. Facility Management

Facility managers can create digital twins of buildings for maintenance, planning, and space management. This digital representation of the interior aids in coordinating activities such as space allocation, equipment placement, and infrastructure maintenance.

  4. Design Visualization

Architects and designers can use 3D Scan to provide clients with realistic visualizations of interior spaces. These models enable stakeholders to visualize layouts and design details, leading to better-informed decisions and more collaborative design processes.

Getting Started

To get started, make sure you have the latest Ground App installed from the App Store and review the Capture Flow and Best Practices below.

Capture Flow
  1. In the Ground App, select the Exterior of your project and enter capture mode
  2. Select the Scan capture mode and set your location with the cross-hair
  3. Tap the red record button to start scanning - Be sure to follow best practices
  4. Tap the stop button to end the scan and proceed to upload your captures per usual

Once processed, you will receive an email notification and be able to see your scans pinned to your project map.

FAQ & Known Limitations: Challenges of Capturing Interior Spaces

What are the accuracy limitations of the 3D Scan feature?

Mobile phone-based 3D scans may not achieve the same accuracy as specialized equipment like laser scanners. Slight discrepancies in measurements could occur, affecting precision in some use cases. Users should account for these potential variations when using the scans for measurements.

How do lighting conditions affect the quality of scans?

Proper lighting is crucial for accurate scans. Poor or uneven lighting can lead to incomplete data collection, resulting in missing details or distorted areas in the model. Ensuring adequate lighting throughout the space helps improve scan quality.

Are complex geometries challenging to capture accurately?

Yes, interior spaces often include intricate shapes, tight corners, and detailed features that can be challenging to capture accurately. The more complex the space, the higher the likelihood of missing some fine details in the resulting model.

How do clutter and movement impact the scanning process?

Scanning spaces with furniture, equipment, or moving people can obstruct the process, leading to errors or incomplete models. It is advisable to clear the area as much as possible and minimize movement during scanning for better results.

What issues arise from surface texture and color during scanning?

Surfaces that are monochromatic, reflective, or have low contrast may be difficult for mobile devices to process accurately. Such materials can impact the scan’s depth perception, leading to less detailed models. To improve quality, consider scanning from different angles or adjusting lighting to enhance contrast.

Which iOS devices support the 3D Scan feature?

The 3D Scan feature is compatible with various iOS devices equipped with LiDAR scanners. Supported devices include Pro or Max models post-2020.

Enhancing Interior Scanning with DroneDeploy Ground 3D Scan

To optimize results, users can follow these tips:

  • Use external lighting or adjust natural lighting for better coverage.
  • Clear the area of clutter and limit movement to avoid interruptions.
  • Scan from multiple angles to capture complex shapes more effectively.

Known Limitations

  • Viewing Scans - All viewing and interaction with your scans are done on the Web app. Scan previews and viewing on mobile will be coming near future.
  • 3D Captures are not yet supported on Levels - Please capture on the Exterior.
  • “Too close to surface” notification is hard coded when you’re within 1m of an object. It does not mean you need to stop scanning, it’s just a warning that you may be capturing too close where there are not enough distinct details for proper reconstruction. .
  • Sometimes, after a scan is completed, the app crashes. Your scan will still be there upon the app's relaunch.
  • Raw scan data can be exported from your device by tapping the unsynced pin, however once synced, the export will no longer be available.

By leveraging DroneDeploy Ground's 3D Scan, users can effectively capture and model interior spaces, enabling better planning, management, and visualization for a wide range of applications.
